Under The Sun

i have been lucky enough to travel. this is a statement not as many people as you think can make. our world is huge, but it is getting smaller by the day. To be able to experience a place and a culture in its entirety is an increasingly rare accomplishment. places as remote as the forgotten tropics and the frigid north now for the most part can check their email, and are inundated regularly with buy-now-brand-'a'. as surfers and as travelers we can truly appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of a place. unfortunately we do not always do so.
in this remote port of the Atlantic i find my self now, there is a blossoming surf scene. it is a beautiful thing, full of naivety, protectiveness, and stoke. the surfies here just got the stoke-fueling privilege of a showing of the fine surf flick: under the sun.
Cyrus Sutton, the filmmaker has produced an epic documentary on the contrasting surf localities of the Gold coast and Byron bay. these two places are so very close physically, yet in attitude are on separate planets. the doco showed this excellently. after the screening Cyrus answered some questions for the crowd, and shared his views on development and responsibilities we as surfers have in sustaining or spots. unreal time, great movie...
buy a copy when it comes out. and instead of bitching to your mates about something at your spot, get together and get involved.
